Our Curriculum Intent

At St John’s C.E Primary school, the inspiring and engaging curriculum has been designed to be broad and inclusive from reception through to year 6, and is personalised to meet the needs of our children within the context of our community and to help them develop a passion for learning. We recognise the prior learning and needs of our children when they arrive in reception and aim to help them develop a full skills set that will help them fit into, and excel in, the ever-changing local and global world in which they live.

A Christian Ethos is at the heart of our children’s learning.  Our core values courage, compassion and respect, permeate through all aspects of the curriculum and we encourage tolerance and an embedded understanding of right and wrong. Through our RE curriculum, our children develop their understanding of each other as well as people of other faiths.

Throughout the school day, children learn in a variety of ways and have the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on learning experiences, which encourage resilience, perseverance and teamwork. They are given opportunities to ask questions, investigate, problem-solve, explore and to deepen their knowledge and understanding through nurturing a curiosity in the world around them. Their creativity is encouraged so that they have the confidence to use their imaginative talents. We want our children to develop a love of reading and frequently share stories that will inspire and engage them.

Every week children enjoy their well-being day when they come to school in their PE uniform. 

We view our school as part of a wider community and there are regular opportunities for our parents, carers and families to share in their child’s learning every term. These have included Book and Breakfast morning, an Art Exhibition and E-safety workshop.

To enrich our curriculum further, we have a range of afterschool clubs on offer, including: netball, choir, multi-skills and others! Clubs provide opportunities for children to try out new skills, develop self-confidence and to build friendships and develop social skills.
